The Research Paper

So... we're about ready to begin thinking about the dreaded research paper. (We don't want to move forward too quickly...) Have you read chapter 8, "Research: Writing with Sources," from Literature for Composition? What about chapters 23, "Starting a Research Project," and 24, "Developing a Search Strategy," from Quick Access?

What are your thoughts on these chapters and the research paper process?

I am a little nearvous about the paper since we only have 3 weeks left of class. I think both books show that research papers if you go step by step and use your the strategy that you develop, the paper should be easy to do. I think the hardest part is obtaining your topic

First fiqure out what your topic is. Next go to the library or get on the internet. Next find a place that is quiet and start reading different material and taking notes. Write down all your soures down. Finally put together a paper and bring in to class or to your teacher and let her review it.

i think its something i will have to do piece by piece until the day it is due. i work non stop now, and its not as much a nervous thing for me as it is a finding time to effectively work on it. ummm a topic would be nice? the book shows how to make it easier, steps and stuff everyone should already know when writing an effective paper. shows me strengths i have and some weakness'. once again, I NEED A TOPIC.

The guide to note-taking and the focus on primary sources sections in barnet helped me a little bit. I usually get very sidetracked away from primary sources. I am also a horrible note-taker. The other book was very structured and basically gave directions; i would have to say it served its purpose in its way but i had already read it for other classes and after having read it before and then reading it after the barnet book it didn't really do anything for me especially since we are apparently going to be researching literature and not other things.

I don’t really fear the process; I just am having a few reservations on getting started. Maybe a little bit of a narrowing down will put me in the right frame of mind. The chapters were helpful as far as the organization and refinement advice and I am looking forward to getting back into a library.

I generally find the quick access book to be more helpful to me personally.(Mostly because it makes it's points with haste) The research process is not something I have to plan out. Sometimes, planning can make things easy. However, the most difficult thing I will have trouble with is sitting down and writing the whole thing out. On the plus side, once I start writing, I won't stop for anything.

Well I agree with everyone who is a little concern with the TOPIC thing. Other than that its another assignment that is due in a short amount of time so I hope the Topic I do pick will be one I can handle.

First of all good luck chcarlock! And second i think this research paper will be easier than the analysis paper. That anaylisis paper straight up kicked my bootay! I read chapter 8 and 23 twice and im still confused. I watched that youtube video and im ready to go.

I always hate research papers...they sneak up on you so easily...but the way the chapter in the book breaks it down makes me definately feel a tad bit better about writing this paper...i always have so little spare time to do these things...

I am a bit nervous about doing the research paper however, if i sit down and concentrate i should be able to get it done. I just need to put time in to it. The books helped but i already knew most of the stuff.
